Before writing the personal statement, I need to find out who will be my readers. Try to have their attention.
Since I want to get an internship, I decide to start with what I did in the past.
The Seattle Public Library
I am looking for an opportunity to use my knowledge and skills. I worked as a product design engineer for nine years. In this company, the products were made to put on some electrical device, such as the panel of cell phone, calculator, bar code scanner, and GPS. During that period, I received On Job Training of 6 Sigma to be a Green Belt, which means I can spot problems before they reach production line. I am studying for a master of science in Physics. I work on the fabrication of fiber-based near field optical probes in Nano-Optics and Structures.
After receiving Bachelor of Science from University, I decided to gain further work experience as an engineer. Being a LCD design engineer, I spent most of my time working with materials including Glass structure-Indium Tin Oxide, Top Coat, and Polarizer. I want to apply what I learned from university to the real industrial problems. Since then, I have learned manipulation of those materials determines the final product in various ways. For example, changing the Polarizer determines the screen color on LCD. After nine years on the job, I learned a lot, especially in the area of optical application. Therefore, I decided to go further and learn more advanced topics in the field of optics.
Since studying in graduate school, I have also found that teamwork is very important, and have pursued group studying as often as I can. The academic life in the U.S. is quite different from what I had in Taiwan. Using group studying, the work efficiency can be improved. After entering the master’s program, I became a hard-working student. I Join study groups and also attend weekly sessions in the tutoring center to improve my writing skills, because I have known what I lack and how I can improve myself in the professional knowledge.
As a long-term goal, I would like to have a direct impact on optical research. I know that with a master’s degree in Physics from Portland State University, I can make a lasting contribution to optics. Nowadays, technology like LCD changes at an exponential rate; it is essential to keep up with new technologies. While I believe nano-materials will soon determine the market and replace some existing materials, I still strive to understand the behavior of each and every material. I believe completing my master’s degree in Physics will help aid in my goal to engage in the field of optics in a way that is both innovative and valuable to society. It will also help me focus my energy towards utilizing different materials in a manner that is both user-friendly and environmentally responsible.
I will continue to study and work extremely hard to achieve my goals. Having a internship will help me to know the real world in the industry.
