This is an individual presentation for my oral class.
I smiled in greeting, and then begin to have a slide show. Here we go~
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, my name is Grace Yen, I am from Taiwan. Today I am very glad to be here with you. I would like to share my experiences in two parts.
First of all, I will start with what I got in the outside lectures which are offered in Physics Department. Next, I would like to share the advice from two graduate students, who currently study in Physics Department.
The outside lectures – Applied Optics and Top: Energy Storage and Battery Tech were both offered in Physics Department. They are several different parts in each class. Not only the numbers of students, but also the teaching styles are very different. Applied Optics keeps growing up, so there is some theories which used in everyday life, but energy storage and battery tech is a new topic, and it is more like a new born baby waiting for people to study and explore.
The first class was taught by Professor Andres La Rosa, who made me open my eyes, and it’s a big class. The second one is taught by Professor Rouvimv S, who is from Russia, but his accent is not hard for me to understand, and this class is a small class. There were only five students including me. Both instructors seem to have good relationship with their students. During the break time they have short conversation about their interviews or what happened to them recently. This is really different from my class in Taiwan, and I think having a good relationship might make students like the class.
This interview project is a great opportunity to have more information about advanced studying in Physics Department. There are two graduate students, who participated in this interview. One of them is an American student and the other is an international student. After the interview, the results have some different and similar responses. In this presentation I will compare the answers from both of them.
One interesting idea from both of graduate students is that “Presentation and group discussion are required in graduate classes.” As an Asian student, most of our time is spent time reading research papers, and we are not trained for public speaking. As a result, American students will often like to answer questions from the professors, and Asian students might be quiet in the class, unless their professors call on them they will say something. And also they tell similar answers when describing the relationship between professor and students. The students said they have a good relationship and sometimes have lunch with their professor. When I was a student in Taiwan, I always kept distance with my teacher because I didn’t want my teacher to notice me. Not only was I afraid of the teacher, but I also didn’t want to be marked as a special student in our classroom.
Because of this relationship, they can get the information from their professor easily. In regards to the group discussion, there is one difference between them because the American student describes it as a fun part of the subject and he likes to find sources to gain more data, and he enjoys his group discussion. On the other hand, the international student has a hard time giving her opinions in the group discussion, also they always have trouble to set a perfect time for every member in their group to meet together. Therefore, she does not really like her group discussions in class.
The most difficult part about graduate school for the American student is doing his homework, but the international student disagreed with him because she thinks it is her responsibility to do her homework. She thinks that the most surprising part about graduate school is some students can debate or argue with their professor. We are taught to respect our professor so it is an interesting experience to see their discussion about different opinions on their matter.
Both of them agree that doing a lot of reading will make one successful in their class. When I was a student, I only read my textbook. I need to change my studying habit to get used to reading a lot books in the future.
There is a similar idea from the international student and my experience. We did not have group discuss and presentation when we were undergraduate students. Most of time, the professor gave us lectures, and students took note, but here we need to participate in each class. As a result, it is a good way to make me focus on the class.
In conclusion, it was a good experience to hear their advice and I would like to absorb their ideas for my advanced studying. I definitely gained from the experience.
That is all for my presentation.
Thanks for your attention.
