The panel discussion gives me the chance to speak in English during the presentation. It is a good opportunity to practice oral skill which we learn in this class, and we can have some feedback from our classmates in the Q and A section. In the other words, we would have the chance to find more detail information by those unexpected questions from panel discussion. If we only read the article by ourselves, we may only focus on what we are interested in, and we might ignore some important information. Therefore, it is necessary to have a panel discussion with other classmates.
After panel discussion, I grade myself 80, and I think that I can do better next time. The first reason is that I don’t know if I answer their questions clearly, I need to make sure they get the response without misunderstanding. The second reason is that I can organize our time better to have face to face meeting. Before the presentation, we had hard time to meet each other, so we sent messages or E-mail to communicate. We try to focus on our article in simple way, in order to explain to audiences who have no background knowledge. There is a saying “A picture is worth a thousand words.” We try to make our power point visual.
Although I am so nervous to show slide and try to explain at the same time. Maybe I need to practice more than 2 weeks. As a result, we both do our best for the presentation. On the other hand, my partner’s article is so interesting, and she answers a lot of questions during the Q and A section. Since we both are female, we are extremely interested in the topic of beauty. I think that she does better than I did, and I would grade her 90. Because her voice is loud and nice to everyone, she describes those results from her research paper to everyone. When we discuss about what we want to show on our slides, we both learn from each other by correcting grammar mistakes while writing the texts for the slide. It is good experience to work with her.
What I learn from the team work is time management. When we started to combine our power point, we had some problems to find out what we need to add in our slide show, and time management was the most difficult part for us. Since we need to divide our time to present our own article, we can’t put a lot of details into our agenda or slides. We also try to come out some questions in case no one ask us question, which we can answer to each other. Sometimes we need to write them down, and then find out the answers later.
After the presentation, I find out that my article (Touch Screens: A Pressing Technology) get attention from my classmates, and I am glad that I changed my article. The experience of panel discussion is really useful to me. I can have chance to prepare speaking in front of other people. If I can overcome my nervousness, I will have better performance. I think that we need to learn more about the skill of public speaking, and maybe we can use more body language to catch our audiences’ attention in the future.
